Background
Jiří z Poděbrad (1420–1471) was the only Czech king who came from the nobility rather than a royal dynasty. He ruled from 1458 to 1471 and was known as the “Hussite King”, promoting religious tolerance between Utraquists and Catholics. He proposed a visionary plan for a European peace union, centuries ahead of its time, which is considered a precursor to the United Nations and European Union. Despite being excommunicated by the Pope and facing internal and external conflicts, he maintained control over Bohemia and worked to stabilize the kingdom. His reign was marked by diplomacy, reform, and efforts to unify Europe against the Ottoman threat.
