A collection of unwanted sculptures

This appeal was sent out by the artist duo Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset in early 2003 as a poster to art institutions throughout the country. For the art objects that have since been delivered in great stylistic variety, for which there is no longer any storage or exhibition space elsewhere for various reasons, a white-fenced area in the middle of the village of Tewel is waiting.
With this work, Elmgreen & Dragset point to the handling of art in public space, giving the unwanted sculptures a new meaning as part of an artistic project. At the same time, they play ironically with the insurmountable difference between sculpture and viewer by presenting the works behind an artificial-looking fence. In this way, art system-immanent attributions such as "in" and "out" are interwoven in an ironic manner.

The park is tucked away beween a housing estate and a playground. It's an art project itself to collect and present sculptures nobody has space for anymore. One would think this area would be filled with unwanted sculptures, but it's just a handful. My favorite was the post GDR street lampshades from Leipzig.
