Background

Jan Hus was a Czech priest, philosopher, and early church reformer who lived in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. He criticized the Catholic Church for corruption and the sale of indulgences, which led to his excommunication and execution by burning at the stake in 1415. His death sparked the Hussite Wars and inspired later reformers like Martin Luther. Hus is considered a national hero in the Czech Republic for his role in shaping Czech identity, language, and religious thought. His legacy is honored annually on July 6th, a national holiday in the Czech Republic.
