Background
The lily (fleur-de-lis) is a central symbol in scouting, representing the three principles of the Scout Promise: duty to God (or a higher principle), duty to self, and duty to others. It was adopted from old maps where the lily pointed north, symbolizing guidance and direction. The two five-pointed stars on the symbol stand for truth and knowledge, and the rope and knot represent unity and friendship among scouts worldwide. In Czech scouting, the lily includes the head of a Chod dog from Alois Jirásek’s novel, symbolizing national heritage, and is placed over a blue trefoil representing girl scouts.
