Background
Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (1850–1937) was a Czech philosopher, sociologist, and politician who became the first president of Czechoslovakia in 1918. He played a key role in the country's independence from Austria-Hungary during World War I, advocating for democracy, human rights, and national self-determination. Masaryk was a strong moral voice, opposing antisemitism and political corruption, and promoting education and civic responsibility. He founded the Czechoslovak National Council, helped organize the Czechoslovak Legions, and authored influential works like The New Europe. His presidency lasted until 1935, and he was widely respected for his integrity and vision.
