Background
The Palladium of the Czech Land is a small Gothic metal relief of the Virgin Mary with baby Jesus, believed to date back to the 14th century and kept in the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Stará Boleslav. According to legend, it was originally given to Saint Ludmila and later carried by Saint Wenceslas, becoming a symbol of divine protection for the Czech lands. Over centuries, it survived wars, thefts, and political turmoil, often hidden or relocated to protect it. It has been associated with miraculous events and is a central object of Marian pilgrimage in the Czech Republic. Today, it is considered a national cultural treasure and is ceremonially honored during major religious and national events.
