Background

Karel Havlíček Borovský (1821–1856) was a Czech writer, journalist, poet, and politician, considered the founder of Czech journalism, satire, and literary criticism. He was a strong advocate for Czech national identity, liberal values, and press freedom, often criticizing the absolutist regime and the Catholic Church. His works, such as Epigramy, Tyrolské elegie, and Král Lávra, used humor and satire to challenge authority and promote civic awareness. He was exiled to Brixen for his political views and died young of tuberculosis. Despite his short life, his legacy shaped Czech literature, politics, and public discourse.
