Background
Karel IV. (1316–1378) was the King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, widely regarded as one of the most influential rulers in Czech history. He founded Charles University in Prague (1348), the first university in Central Europe, and initiated major architectural projects like Karlštejn Castle and Charles Bridge. His reign marked the golden age of the Czech lands, with Prague becoming the imperial capital of the Holy Roman Empire. He issued the Golden Bull of 1356, a constitutional document that secured the special status of the Czech kingdom within the empire. Karel IV. was highly educated, spoke five languages, and was known for his diplomatic skill and cultural patronage. Karel IV. is celebrated as the “Father of the Nation” (Otec vlasti) for his role in strengthening Czech statehood, culture, and education. His legacy is visible throughout Prague and Czech history, and he remains a symbol of national pride, wisdom, and leadership. He was voted the Greatest Czech in a national poll and is featured on the 100 Kč banknote. His contributions laid the foundation for Czech identity and European influence.
