Background

Saint Vojtěch (c. 956–997), born into the noble Slavník family, was the second bishop of Prague and a key figure in the Christianization of Central Europe. He strongly opposed pagan practices, slave trading, and moral corruption, and promoted religious reform and education. After facing resistance in Bohemia, he left twice and eventually died as a missionary martyr in Prussia. He founded the Břevnov Monastery, the first male monastery in Bohemia, and contributed to early Czech and Polish religious literature. He was canonized in 999 and is buried in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague.
